I was asked if I could make an ” Among Us” cake for someones. I have to admit, I was clueless as to what ” Among Us” was and what was being requested.
After a little bit on internet research, I learned that it was a pretty popular game with children. The jest that I gathered is the it is a ship game. There are crew members that have task to accomplish. Among the crew there is an imposter…hence the name ” Among Us”
When you are playing you do not know if you are the imposter or a crew member initially. Or that is what I understand. The crew members crawl through the duct work to arrive into various locations.
I am not sure why or how, but crew members get killed with various devices.
That is about the extend of my knowledge about the game ” Among Us”. What I can share though is how I made the cake.
Making the “Among Us ” Cake
Design Decisions
- Flavor of Cake
- Buttercream verses ganche filling,, Fondant versers chocolate molding
- Colors to use
- Overall design- a flat cake or 3 D
- Among Us elements
The requested cake flavor was chocolate.. Click on The Ultimate Chocolate Cake link if you need a fabulous chocolate cake recipe.
Chocolate ganache is a favorite of mine, but for a big chocolate cake chocolate ganache would be to much.
Buttercream frosting provides a lot of flexibility. I variety of colors can easily be incorporated using buttercream. If you need a great buttercream recipe click here.
Among Us video game is very colorful. The crew members are a variety of colors . I used primary colors with a couple of secondary colors to achieve the look that I was going for.
The Among Us can designed in numerous ways. I elected to make a 3 D cake to bring the cake alive.
I like to use sugar cookies on cakes when making 3D designs. Fondant and/or chocolate molding are also great for creating imagines
Preparing the Cake

I doubled The Ultimate Chocolate Cake recipe in order to have 4 layers. The cake pans were weighted to make sure that each layer would be the same size. The cake pans were wrapped to prevented the cake layers from doming.
The Frosting

While the cakes were cooling, I made a double batch of buttercream frosting. Remember…the the cake was doubled so the frosting needed to be doubled as well. Yep, I used 22 cups of powdered sugar.
I had 5 colors that I wanted to use in the buttercream. Four of the colors for between the cake layers and one for the overall surface of the cake.
I started out with placing approximately 2-3 cups of buttercream frosting into 4 bowls.Using gel food color, each bowl of buttercream frosting was colored a different color. I used purple, green, yellow and orange.
The buttercream frosting was then transferred to piping pages…one for each color. Going around in circles from the outer edge to the center, frosting( green and purple) was added first to the the top of the first layer.
The next cake layer was placed on top of the green and purple frosted and it’s top had both yellow and orange
The third cake was added and green and purple frosted was piped . The top layer was then added. No frosting added at the time to the top layer since it is the outside layer.
Staking the Cake

As the cake is staked it can become wobbly. To ensure that the cake remains stable and straight, large straws were inserted to hold the layers in place and provide stability. I use a small level prior to inserting the straws and push down where needed to obtain a level cake.
Crumb coating the cake
A thin coat of frosting was added to the top and sides of the cake to make sure that the outer frosting does not have crumbs in it. The cake is then refrigerated to set the frosting before applying the outer coat of frosting.
Decorating the Cake
Decorating the cake is where the fun begins. Using the elements learned about the game, I decide that I would use sugar cookies to make the crew members, fondant to make a floor map, the flame and the spaceship.

The cake was first covered with a midnight blue color of frostings. The night sky with the appearance of stars was created by dipping a paint brush ( baking paint brush) into white food coloring and flicking the bristles.
Making the Crew Members Out of Sugar Cookies
Besides having a cute design elements, the sugar cookies are a yummy design to eat. Click this click for the Flavorful Sugar Cookies that I used.
Template for Making the Crew member Cookies
I used two methods to make a template for the cookies. One was making a cookie cutter and the other was using parchment paper that I drew the shape needed. The cookie cutter is faster with cutting out the dough, but the parchment paper works just as well.
How to Make a Cookie Template
First draw your image on paper. Using a thin aluminum strip create the cookie cutter by bending the aluminum to follow the shape. Tape the two ends together.

Decorating the Cookies
Bake the cookies and when they are cooled added royal icing in the colors that you like. Click the link Easy To Work With Royal Icing for a great recipe.
Details for the crew members where added using fondant and an edible marking pen.
Additional Decorating Elements
Fondant
Various colors of fondant were used to decorate the cake. The ” blast”, spaceship, and map were made from fondant.
